The second part of Matthew Lopez’s groundbreaking two-part play continues with the story of the group of young people living in New York after the AIDs epidemic. One of the central characters, Toby Darling, has written his first play, which receives success along with catastrophic problems for all concerned. It is through Toby’s story that difficult and damaging aspects of modern life are revealed. Following Walter’s death, Eric and Henry Wilcox form a strong relationship, but it becomes unclear whether it is love or grief that has led the two men to one another. Although Eric appears to be more stable than Toby, we learn that this is not the case and that despite their different choices, they have more in common than they think. They may struggle to live together, but they struggle even more without one another.
The appearance of Margaret (the only female character in the seven-hour play) offers another account of American gay history and provides a voice of hope and support in what has, by this point, become a bleak and desperate situation for the young men. This results in a harrowing, funny, emotional rollercoaster with an ultimately optimistic conclusion.
What to watch for
The play is inspired by EM Forster's “Howards End. The film version of the book featured legendary actress Vanessa Redgrave (who appears in Part 2 of the play).
The family home that inspired Forster’s novel is a Grade I listed property in Hertfordshire that dates back to the 1600s. Matthew Lopez has even paid a visit! Look out for the beautiful miniature house in the play that has many of the same characteristics.
The epic two-part play is directed by multi-award winner Stephen Daldry (“Billy Elliot,” “The Jungle,” “The Crown"). He wanted the play to have its world premiere as far away from New York as possible, with the goal of a U.S. transfer in 2019.
